JOPLIN, Mo. — The Joplin History and Mineral Museum have a special temporary display for the Christmas season. It’s a portion of a Christmas blow mold collection from a local resident and they are collecting money and toys for kids at Christmas.

The Molinaro Christmas Light Display showcases numerous lighted blow molds presented in glass cases for viewing.

The blow molds range from the religious: the Nativity, angelic choir members, to the pop culture of their time: Mickey Mouse, Frosty, and Santa and his reindeer. Their collection comprises so many pieces one could sit and soak it in for quite some time.

A process patented in 1881 by Celluloid Novelty Co. of New York was adapted a half century later to create lighted lawn ornaments for the Christmas season.

The pieces are very nostalgic. Some call them tacky or retro. The Christmas figures “blew up” 😉 in popularity in the late 1950’s. Those from that era are highly collectible.

Vintage pieces can bring a few hundred dollars each, most are sold in small collections at auction in the thousands. There are much cheaper new reproductions ranging $30 - $75 each, available on Amazon or Walmart.com.

“The Christmas Light display, on loan from D. Molinaro, is now up in the museum for the holiday season. This display features blow molds from many different decades and is set up to help benefit Toys for Tots in the area.”

Admission to the museum, located at 504 S Schifferdecker, $5 for adults and free to children 12 and under. Hours are Tues—Sat 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.
