A guy like Seth, as Neil Young noted “needs a maid” – or, in the case of 31-year-old Seth, a willing playmate to help make him the slave master he desperately wanted to be.
He found her in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. She was 18-year-old Kathryn “Kat” McDonough – and she was game for the BDSM lifestyle Mazzaglia favoured.
“I was just so in love and enthralled by him,” she later said. “It was also just easier and not having to deal with the truth of what was happening. It was easier to just play along … and pretend that everything was going to be okay.”
In a letter that later emerged, Mazzaglia wrote to McDonough: “I will dominate you… brutally… without mercy.” In other missives, he playfully calls her a “whore” and he was always on the hunt for a third party for their kinky games.

Kat – a popular local actress and recent high school graduate – thought she had found the candidate in University of New Hampshire sophomore Elizabeth “Lizzi” Marriott, 19. She was a happy, studious girl in a lesbian relationship.
On Oct. 9, 2012, Lizzi – trying to make new friends – went to Mazzaglia and McDonough’s apartment for a night of cards and movies. She would not see the sunrise.
Detectives honed in on the kinky couple quickly. Sick in love McDonough lied through her teeth to cops in a videotaped statement, later played in court.
It was, she said, all a terrible accident.
“Seth was sitting and the two of us were kinda just goofing around,” she said on the tape, adding that strip poker turned into a group sex session.
“It started going from silly to sexual. It started – getting a little more intense,” she told cops, adding Lizzi agreed to be tied up with ropes. “I’d tied a harness on myself before, but it was the first time I’d ever tied harnesses on someone else.”
Lizzi died of a seizure in the middle of the sexual encounter, suffocated and died, McDonough said.
During Mazzaglia’s trial, the tape was played and cut to ribbons by his legal team. And then, McDonough told the truth about the twisted evening
The creepy Mazzaglia and the two women played strip poker. As the game moved along, McDonough was naked, Lizzie in only her underwear. The dungeon master wanted the two to kiss, Lizzie refused.
Do you want to watch us have sex? Again, Lizzie demurred claiming she was “uncomfortable” with the scenario. There would be no sexual activity that night and instead, the trio watched a movie called Darkness Rising.
A few minutes later, Mazzaglia – who signed his missives Dark Heart – slipped a rope around Lizzie’s neck and strangled her to death.
“She was sitting right next to me and he moved up close behind her,” McDonough said. “He wrapped the rope up over her head and around her neck, and started pulling on it. She let out a quick noise and then stopped moving.”
Mazzaglia then raped her dead body.
Two of his friends later popped by the apartment and saw Lizzie’s lifeless body. But McDonough staged the scene to make it look like the vivacious young woman died during bondage sex complete with a plastic grocery bag taped over the victim’s head.
There was no panic from Mazzaglia who instead ordered his lovesick muse to help him get rid of the body. Lizzie was driven about 15 km to the New Hampshire coast and her body was dumped in the ocean.
And because McDonough helped him ditch Lizzie’s body, the two had sex the next morning and as her reward, she was allowed to be “on top.”
Prosecutors asked the sobbing young woman why she did nothing to help.
“At the time, I was so in love with him,” McDonough said explaining her seeming indifference.
“I felt like if I lost him, that was it. I didn’t have anything else in my life. I felt like it was him or nothing. I didn’t have anyone else, and so when he said to do something, I thought, ‘Well, if I do this, I won’t lose him.'”
Seth Mazzaglia’s legal team pointed the finger at McDonough, sifted through her previous fibs and painted her as a liar. Prosecutors painted the young sex slave as a victim of Mazzaglia as well.
McDonough pleaded guilty to her role and was sentenced to one-and-a-half to three years in prison in exchange for cooperating with investigators and testifying against Mazzaglia. She was released in 2016.
Mazzaglia wasn’t so lucky. In 2014, he was sentenced to life in prison. A recent appeal was torpedoed.
As her 10 days on the witness stand wore on, McDonough had an epiphany about the horrors she had helped perpetrate.
“There are so many things that she’s never going to be able to do,” McDonough sobbed. “There were so many things that she could’ve done (with her life).”
