Rooted in Humanity at Hudson Guild Gallery is a series which addresses issues of the environment, and tensions within our current diverse and often divisive society. Photographs of anthropomorphic tree roots form the underpinning of this series. Delving deep within the images, Horowitz encourages figures to reveal themselves. Then she creates photographic colored pencil drawings which become the basis for sculptural figures of wire mesh shrouded in gauze and spun copper that are ethereal and translucent. The delicate nature of humanity is portrayed through these ephemeral forms, creating haunting shadows as important as the physical sculptures themselves.
We the People at Guild Gallery II is a series which draws from historical use of relief sculpture, bringing these methods to current topics. Starting her process with camera in hand, Horowitz records and engages with her subjects, digesting postures of individuals whose faces reflect their stories. She then combines photographs, wire, papier mache, encaustic wax, torched copper, brass mesh and paint, to create layered and technically complex portraits. These pieces, reflecting interpretations of everyday moments, depict isolation, disassociation and violation, while bringing light to the overlooked of our society. Animal Barrier
Lori Horowitz’s work as an arts educator, scenic designer for theatre and television, curator and gallerist, has informed the development of her artwork. Since 2015, she has had nine solo exhibitions and participated in more than 75 gallery and museum group shows. During her time as curator and executive director of Studio 5404 Art Space in New York City, she organized 25 shows. She is currently a featured artist in Art-Trends.com publication, Paris – https://art-trends.com/ – and is represented internationally by Galerie Ludwig Trossaert. Her work has been featured in the New York Times, 1340 Art International, and the magazines Azucar, Apero, and Zeit Blatt. Horowitz has crafted a wholly unique practice for her art which rehumanizes anonymous people as well as elements of nature that we encounter every day, providing intriguing narratives while formally stretching the bounds of the varied materials she uses in her work.
